The Juvenile Services Department is actively recruiting for a Juvenile Counselor I position. As a Juvenile Counselor I, you will provide supervision and skills building to juvenile offenders in residential care. Additionally, you may monitor client activities and progress, document behaviors and incidents, as well as accompany juveniles to court.
The current opening at Harkins House provides residential care services based on an individual's needs. Harkins House serves youth 12-17 years of age while providing individual and group skills training, recreational activities, counseling, and the opportunity to participate in a culinary arts program. Youth in the program are pending alleged violations of the law or are on probation.

The incumbent may perform a combination of some or all of the following duties, which represent the level of work appropriate to this classification:
Assists in providing individual and family skills training; provides skill building via implementation of effective practices in community supervision to youth to address behavioral and emotional problems.
Directs supervision and control of activities of juveniles to include leading activities and groups; organizes household responsibilities and ensures follow-through by juveniles; verbally intervenes and de-escalates potential crisis situations as needed; may be assigned to dispense medication, as required.
Assists in creating a positive and supportive work environment; enforces a safe workplace; establishes a culture of teamwork and communication; creates a workplace that promotes the organizational values of workplace equity, diversity, and inclusion and actively promotes an environment respectful of living and working in a multicultural society.
Prepares reports for courts; maintains records of juvenile casework, including interviews, assessments, services provided, and juveniles' progress.

Possession of a driver's license valid in the State of Oregon and an acceptable driving record per Washington County policy.
Completion of a criminal history check in accordance with Oregon Administrative Rules.

Selection Process
1. A minimum qualifications evaluation of training and experience of submitted application packets will be performed by Human Resources after the posting closes.
2. Our goal is to schedule oral panel interviews with candidates who successfully passed the HR Evaluation step as soon as possible. Candidates will be contacted based on their selected schedule availability as it relates to the needs of the hiring department at that time.
3. Washington County will perform a DMV, background, and reference checks on the candidate that successfully passes the oral panel interviews and is selected for the position(s).
